About
As a fiction writer myself, and as a longtime teacher, I bring to my editing a sensitivity to the vagaries of the creative process and a strong focus on craft. From my many years spent reading submissions—for literary magazines, a small press, and two major publishers—I also bring a sense of the market (big and small) and an eye for what will catch (and hold) a reader’s attention.
My editorial experience ranges from book publishing (Viking and Farrar, Straus & Giroux) to literary magazines (45th Parallel, Cincinnati Review) and a small press (Acre Books). Most recently, I’ve taught an Editing & Publishing course at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. I hold an MFA in fiction from Oregon State University and a PhD in Creative Writing & Literature from the University of Cincinnati. I am a longtime instructor of English and creative writing at the undergraduate level.
